Type Locality and Naming

It was named by Inai Y. as the “Sangeling Conglomerate” in 1934. The naming section is located in the Sangeling area of Tianshifu Town, Benxi City, Liaoning Province.

Synonym: (三个岭组)


Lithology and Thickness

Lower part is composed of medium-bedded conglomerate and micro-conglomerate. Upper part is composed of medium-, and fine-grained pebble-bearing sandstones, intercalated with shales, and locally with thin coal beds or coal seams, with a thickness of 100-500 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It represents continuous deposits in relation to the underlying Dabao Fm

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as Xiaodonggou Fm

Regional extent

It is distributed essentially in the Tianshifu and Saima-Aiyang Basins.

Fossils

It yields plant fossils consisting of 15 genera and 17 species, and belonging to a middle-stage assemblage of the Coniopteris-Phoeniocopsis flora.


Age 

Schematic strat column in the previous "red Chinese Lexicon" had implied that the Sangelng Fm spanned mid-Middle Jurassic.
